Jason Bateman’s Family Guide: Parents, Sister, Wife and More

Jason Bateman isn’t the only actor in his family.

Jason’s parents, film producer and director Kent Bateman and flight attendant Victoria Bateman, welcomed his older sister, Justine Bateman in February 1966 before they expanded their family with Jason in January 1969.

When she was a teenager, Justine starred on the sitcom Family Ties from 1982 through 1989. Meanwhile, Jason started his acting career at just 10 years old, when he landed roles in Little House on the Prairie and The Hogan Family.

“My parents were my managers, and they were making more money doing that than what they were: my mom was a flight attendant for Pan Am. My dad was a freelance writer, director, producer,” Jason revealed on an episode of the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in February 2025. “And, you know, 15% of what I was making at that time just ended up being more than what they were making in their careers.”

Having his parents as his managers and his sister also in the acting business ultimately caused some tension in the family. As adults, Jason and Justine “don’t see each other a ton.”

“There isn’t the typical ‘We see each other every Thanksgiving or every Christmas and our kids want to be together,’” Jason explained in a December 2025 interview with Esquire. “There isn’t that. … In a great way.”

Kent Bateman and Victoria Bateman

Kent and Victoria, who married in 1965, welcomed Justine in 1966 and Jason in 1969. Kent, born in October 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah, was a film producer for Ealing Films in the late 60s and 70s. Victoria was a flight attendant for the now defunct airline, Pan Am.

After Justine started appearing in Family Ties as a teenager, Kent and Victoria became her manager along with Jason when he was 10 — which caused some tension within the family.

“It became an important component,” Bateman shared in a February 2025 episode of the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast, referring to how his parents’ were making more money as managers than they were in their respective careers. “We were living in a certain condo that we wouldn’t be able to live in if they were just using their salaries.”

Jason said he felt a lot of pressure to maintain good grades so he could update his work permit every six months.

“The pressure of midterms and finals every year was immense for me, because it was 60% of your grade,” Bateman explained, adding that he thought, “if I fail my midterm, I don’t get my work permit, which means I’m kicked off the show, which means everyone on the show loses their job, we lose our house.”

Kent and Victoria split in 1989. According to Kent’s IMDB, he went on to marry Elaine Marie Eaton in 1990, however, the pair divorced in 2006. (Kent also shared two kids with Elaine, along with one child from a previous marriage to Barbara Jane Lowenthal.)

Jason Bateman and his older sister, Justine Bateman, both grew up in the spotlight. While Jason is known for getting his start as James Cooper Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie when he was 11 years old, Justine’s big break came at age 16 when she played Mallory Keaton on Family Ties. Justine later […]

Throughout the years, Justine and Jason have not addressed their relationship with each other, except for Jason noting that their bond was “healthy” in 2015.

“Well, let’s earn the relationship that adults should or could have,” Jason said on the “WTF With Marc Maron” podcast in 2015. “You’re not handcuffed because of the blood. You’ve gotta earn it.”

Although Jason said he and Justine get along and live “a mile” apart, they’re families aren’t super close.

“I could be a better uncle, brother, son, Marc,” Jason confessed at the time.

Nearly a decade later, Justine appeared to shut down speculation that she and Jason had a falling out.

“Anyone bringing up my brother to me for any other reason than to say you like his new upcoming show, or any of his past work, will be muted at best, and blocked at worst,” she wrote via X in September 2025. “I’m not interested in your fantasy about some imagined conflict between the two of us over your political ideologies. Really, it’s sick.”

Two months after Justine’s comments, Jason said that he and Justine “don’t see each other a ton” these days, adding that they no visit each other “every Thanksgiving or every Christmas.”

“There isn’t that. … In a great way,” he said in an interview with Esquire in December 2025. “Our conversations are the rich conversations you would have with an adult friend, not the kind of petulant back-and-forth you might have with your adult sibling. We hang out, and we’re nice to each other because we respect one another as individuals regardless of the blood thing. I’m seeing her for lunch next week.”

Jason met his wife, Amanda Anka, at a Los Angeles Kings hockey game when they were teenagers in 1987, though they didn’t start dating until a decade later.

“I just wasn’t into where he was at,” Anka — who has starred in projects such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost Highway, Taxi, and The Morning Show, which she also co-produces — explained in a March 2013 interview with GQ.

The daughter of famed Canadian singer Paul Anka tied the knot with Jason in 2001 after four years of dating. The couple welcomed daughter Francesca in October 2006 followed by daughter Maple in February 2012.

While the twosome have kept their romance relatively private throughout the years, Jason has occasionally given his wife her public flowers.

“She’s got a full-time career herself, and she’s able to be a full-time mom, and she’s almost a full-time dad too,” Jason told Us Weekly at the SAG Awards in January 2019. “I’m just floored by that. So that keeps me grounded. That reminds me that I’ve got a real strong example to live up to.”
