Arturo Gatti Jr. made an eerie final post on social media just weeks before his sudden death.
Gatti Jr., the son of late boxing legend Arturo Gatti, posted an AI-generated photo of himself and his father via Instagram on September 22.
The post was captioned with emojis of a white dove and a blue heart.
Gatti Jr., who was busy following in his late father’s boxing footsteps, was found dead in an apartment in Mexico on Tuesday, October 7. He was 17 years old.
The amateur boxer lived in Mexico with his mother and Gatti Sr.’s widow, Amanda Rodrigues.
According to Gatti Sr.’s former bodyguard, Chuck Zito, Gatti Jr. died by suicide.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I have to say R.I.P. to 17-year-old ARTURO GATTI JR.,” Zito wrote via Instagram alongside a carousel of photos of the amateur boxer.
Zito explained that Gatti Jr. was found “the same way they found his father dead in an apartment in Brazil 16 years ago.”
Gatti Sr. death in 2009 was ultimately ruled a suicide. He was 37.
Gatti Jr.’s final Instagram post has become a place for both of the late boxers to be remembered, with friends and fans commenting with their condolences.
“RIP to you both…damn life is not fair ❤️,” one person wrote.
Professional boxer Jean Pascal shared, “The world loses another Gatti. The son of a legend two fighters, one legacy, both gone too soon. May they reunite in peace. My heart is heavy … life can be unfair sometimes. I’m sending strength, love, and prayers to his family. May he rest in power, like his father a true warrior. 😢🙏🏾🕊️.”
The World Boxing Council issued a statement about Gatti Jr.’s death on Wednesday, October 8.
“The World Boxing Council expresses its deepest condolences following the passing of Arturo Gatti Jr., who at only 17 years old was emerging as one of boxing’s bright young prospects,” the statement read. “Young Arturo Gatti Jr. represented the hope of a new era, with the fire, passion and heart of a champion.”
The statement concluded, “The WBC sends its heartfelt condolences to the Gatti family, friends, and the entire boxing community mourning this so heartbreaking loss.”
Gatti Sr. married his wife, Amanda Rodrigues, in 2007. The couple welcomed Gatti Jr. the following year.
Rodrigues discussed her late husband — and how his memory lives on in their son — during an interview with CBS News in 2012.
“The smile is the same … just like his daddy,” Rodrigues said. “I miss my husband very much. I miss him when I go to sleep. I miss him when I wake up.”
Rodrigues was initially charged with murder after her late husband’s death was ruled a homicide.
The cause of death was later ruled as a suicide after the coroner’s autopsy report was released and the charges against Rodrigues were dropped.
